TERESA MADEIRA

Teresa Madeira is a Portuguese cellist, specialized in historically informed performance practice and focusing mainly on the Baroque period and its various bass instruments.

Based in Belgium, she combines a varied musical career of orchestral and chamber music activity, regularly collaborating as a freelancer with ensembles such as Collegium Vocale Gent, Real Câmara, Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal de Versailles, Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música, BachPlus, Terra Nova Collective or La Cetra d’Orfeo. Teresa has performed under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe, Laurence Cummings, Sigiswald Kuijken, Enrico Onofri, Andreas Staier, Barthold Kuijken, Théotime Langlois de Swarte, Stéphane Fuget and Paul McCreesh, among others. She was a member of the academy of the Collegium Vocale Gent between 2020 and 2022, and a member of the string academy of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera of Versailles during the 2023-24 season.

Teresa completed her degree in 2014 at the Metropolitana National Superior Orchestra Academy of Lisbon, in the class of Paulo Gaio Lima. In the same year she went to Belgium where she completed her master’s degrees in modern cello with Justus Grimm at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, and in baroque cello in the early music department of the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels in the class of Hervé Douchy.

In 2022, she co-founded the chamber music ensemble Ayres Extemporae, with which she won the 1st Revelación SMADE Prize and the Aplauso SMADE Audience Prize at the Estella-Lizarra Early Music Week in Navarra, Spain. In the same year, they also won 2nd Prize at the Biagio Marini International Early Music Competition in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany. Winners of the York International Young Artists Competition 2024, they received, among other prizes, a professional recording contract with the record label Linn Records for their debut album, due in 2025.
