VAROUJAN DONEYAN
At 6 years old, Varoujan wanted to play the saxophone. But your fingers are too small, the teacher says, “So go play the recorder for the next two years.” And behold, little Varoujan follows in the footsteps of his sister Gayané, who started playing the recorder some time earlier.
Then Varoujan heard and saw a concert by the Quartet Komitas (Armenia) at the Château de Champs-sur-Marne. He was fascinated by the quartet’s first violin. As the concert progresses, he gets closer and closer, until he finds himself in the front row, imitating the lively violinist.
And then… there is Daniel, the baroque violinist uncle, with a sanguine temperament. One day his uncle brings him a small violin, and there the love story begins.
It will last about ten years. At the Conservatoire Municipal de Bry-sur-Marne with Agès Thaureau, a student of Anne-Marie Morin, who will take him under her wing to the Conservatoire du 9ème Arrondissement de Paris.
And then, and then… the royal path to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris opens up. It is there that complications and disenchantment arise. The competition is tough, you are no longer number one.
Boris Garlitsky teaches him the basics of stage performance and how to develop charisma.
In 2007, he leaves the Conservatoire with a Diplôme de Formation Supérieure.
One night, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, he is in the front row, mouth agape, staring at a violinist from the baroque ensemble Le Concert d’Astrée. She is absorbed in the opera, recites the text silently, seems transcended. It’s decided, Varoujan will play the baroque violin.
In Freiburg im Breisgau, he studies with Rainer Kussmaul and starts playing the baroque violin with Gottfried von der Goltz.
With Mira Glodeanu in Brussels, he will discover the thousand and one beauties of the 18th century French music.
The following decade saw him play in groups such as Les Agremens, Freiburger Barockorchester, Anima Eterna, Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, La Loge Olympique, Le Poème Harmonique, La Chapelle Harmonique, Les Siècles, B’Rock, Transports Publics…
In October 2018, an earthquake occurs. A sharp delirious burst will put him out of action for four years. Recently, Varoujan has returned with pleasure to his violin, and is studying Indian and Arabic music in Montpellier, where he currently lives.
